Guests staying at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club can enjoy a day filled with different kinds of bird species in the Vaal area by exploring the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, where birds like the Sentinel Rock Trush and the Black Harrier can be seen in winter, and other times of the year they will be able to see birds like the Ground Woodpecker, the Black Eagle, Grey winged and Red winged Francolins, Striped Pipits, Larks and Cisticolas.

The Waterfowl Park and Riviera Wetlands and Bird Sanctuary also offer bird watching on foot. Here 16 different species of South African Duck can be seen, as well as 116 species of exotic ducks, geese and swan and over 65 species of wild water birds. 4 Species of Flamingo, as well as all three species of South African Crane (which form part of the captive breeding programme) can be seen here.
