Romantic Poems: Dos and don’ts

So what are the dos and don’ts when it comes to writing romantic poems? Have you ever received a poem that started with the following?
“Roses are red, violets are blue…”
Do I need to continue? (Wow, I’m a poet and I don’t even know it!)
