Riviera on Vaal Country Club: Back Then

Riviera on Vaal’s country club has quite a lot of stories to tell.

Isaac Lewis, one of Vereeniging’s founders, purchased the country club’s grounds from the company, Anglo American in the late 1890s. There he built his own residence, which we know as the Riviera on Vaal Country Club today. The Riviera Hotel was erected near the residence at a later stage.

Roy Lewis, Isaac Lewis’s son, lived in the residence for some time and when he left for the UK, Louis Marks repurchased the house and grounds for Vereeniging Estates. Subsequently the house was converted into the Vereeniging Country Club.

The Country Club was taken over by the Municipality in 1948 and it was agreed that the council and the judicial managers will contribute equally to the former Club owner, Mr. A.D. Bobby Locke. He was retained as the club’s resident professional golfer.

  1. Hello, could you please advise me where Bobby Locke was golf pro, at which Club? Is it the rovcountryclub or the maccauvleigolfclub? Thank you kindly, Roland

    • Hi Roland, Bobby Locke was appointed club professional at Maccauvlei in 1939, and resigned in 1940. Not 100% sure, but seems he was club professional at Vereeniging Country Club (Riviera Country Club) after that, around 1948. The signature par 3 14th hole at Vereeniging CC (Riviera), which plays over the Klip River to an elevated green with the Vaal River just behind, waiting to catch out the long hitters, was part of his personal “dream 18 holes” worldwide! Locke was a regular at the club.
      Hope this answers your question!
      Thanks
